8 Things You Should Know About Monkey D. Garp

Aside from Luffy himself, Garp is the only Romance Dawn V.2 character to actually appear in the storyline.

Garp’s laughter style is that he adds either “Bwa” or “Wa” before the haha part. This is somewhat unique as most characters only stick with one laughter style (the other being Dracule Mihawk).

Garp appears to have a dog animal-theme, as shown by his mask and his ship.In the anime, Garp said he has eaten 842 donuts without sleeping or taking a break because he was trying to beat a world record.

In an SBS question on Volume 59, a fan pointed out the fact that despite Garp’s few appearances, his trademark scar has disappeared 25 times if counted up to Volume 58. In response to the statement above, Oda responded by saying that “if an enemy he hates is around, his scar tingles, and it will float up”. He speaks of how Garp’s “true form” may be the scar-less one, but he also points out that this is not proved anywhere. This is obviously a joke answer, as Oda is fond of them.

When he was a child and a young Marine, Garp resembled Luffy, though more muscular than his grandson. As a child, he wore a tropical button shirt with shorts and wielded a pipe staff. Garp already had the scar on his left eye in his childhood days.

Due to his grudge against him, Chinjao wants Garp to suffer the pain of losing someone close to him. Ironically, Garp already underwent that pain upon losing Ace.

In the 5th fan poll, Garp ranked 74th.

Zoro vs Sanji

D: Zoro and Sanji are always fighting! I was reading One Piece and thought it was odd that Zoro never seems to refer Sanji by his name, so I went back and checked!  I counted them up from Volume 5 to 66! Here are the results, ranked by frequency!!!In conclusion, Sanji does in fact refer to Zoro by name, but Zoro does not return the favor! P.N. Little Marron

O: …Okay. Thank you very much, Little Marron! So you counted them all… This was very fun to read! Some of these terms made me wonder when they’d said these things. Indeed, I have trouble imagining Zoro calling him “Sanji” by name. Not once, eh? Wow. Well, they might not get along well, but they’re both valuable, trustworthy men who have Luffy’s back. So let’s forgive them their squabbles (laughs).

Does Rebecca have any underwear?

D: Hello, Mr. Oda! I have a question about Rebecca the gladiator. I couldn’t help that, perhaps due to your personal tastes, she is exposing quite a lot of skin. My question regards her bikini bottom. Is it possible that beneath that flap of cloth is a paradise of non-pantyness? I’m so curious about this, I can’t even put on any underwear. P.N. Tanpopo

O: Hmm, I see. I have a feeling that I shouldn’t answer this question. I know the answer, but I’ll keep it to myself! Sweet dreams!

Florian Triangle

The Florian Triangle, (literally translated as Zone of Demonic Triangle) is a stretch of sea that one has to cross over when heading from Water 7 to Fishman Island. It is covered in a fog so thick that it blocks out all sunlight.
According to Kokoro, many pirate and commercial ships mysteriously go missing every year and, sometimes, a ship will be found sailing without any people aboard. It has also been said that there are many haunted ships with dead bodies sailing across the sea (though, it is revealed that all this is attributed to Brook).
During the Thriller Bark Arc, the Straw Hats went to the Triangle on their way to Fishman Island and discovered that Gekko Moriah was using it to trap victims to be used for his zombie army.
Though, some of the disappearances that have happened in the Triangle can be attributed to Moriah’s scheme. Ships have been disappearing mysteriously in it for a long time before he came on his ship, Thriller Bark, ten years before the series. This mystery is confirmed by an unknown ominous entity larger than Thriller Bark that was barely seen by Captain Lola through the fog.It is so large that it completely dwarfs Thriller Bark, the world’s largest pirate ship, in sheer size, possibly making it the world’s biggest creature to appear in the series thus far.

Weird Ways One Piece Has Been Censored

Censorship in anime is an interesting topic considering how it is censored within Japan as well as outside Japan when it is dubbed. Why exactly are some things censored while others are not? When an anime is dubbed, how much of it is changed before it is released for the masses? Is all of it always really even necessary? Here are some examples of censorship in One Piece:

Best crew ever!

The Red Hair Pirates are the first pirate crew to appear in the manga series and second to appear (next to the Alvida Pirates) in the animated series One Piece. They are the main influences of both Luffy’s (Shanks inspired Luffy) and Usopp’s (wants to become a brave warrior of the sea like his father Yasopp) journeys. Twelve years before the present story line, they spent a year in Luffy’s home town and became very good friends with him, which led to him wanting to become part of their crew. However, Shanks told him that he was too weak, which angered him. Shanks was also the one who unintentionally supplied Luffy with his Devil Fruit.

Is Luffy only attracted to Nami? Oda gave us the answer!

2 Different Reactions, 1 Answer!

As stated by Eiichiro Oda Luffy reacted to Nami’s naked body (in volumes 18 and 23, and both times it happened, Usopp was with him) because when he’s with Usopp, who’s the same age, it’s like a kid on a school trip: his bad side comes out!! So the culprit is definitely Usopp!

In other words, when Luffy is alone, his reaction with Nami is what it was with Hancock. He’s interested, but he’s not entranced by them.

Romantic Relationships in One Piece

Myth: X character in One Piece is in love with X other character in One Piece.

Fact: It is not uncommon to see pairings mentioned like Luffy x Nami, Luffy x Boa Hancock, Sanji x Nami, Zoro x Nico Robin,  however some fans try to force the speculation into fact when it is not.

Fans love to fantasize about possible character couples.

When asked if there would be romance in One Piece in a SBS letter, Eiichiro Oda replied “they are in love with adventure”. There are no hints released in the manga itself. There exist minor love stories such as Kyros and Scarlett’s love story and certain relationships have been addressed (such as Piiman, Tamanegi and Ninjin mentioning how Usopp is a “lucky man” to have somebody as Kaya) but they are rather minor and no major relationship has been officially confirmed. As such, most love referencing comes in the form of perverted comments from one character to the other. Oda said that since this is a shonen manga, there is practically no romance (with a few exceptions, such as married couples, etc.) Not counting Sanji’s feelings towards almost every female being in existence, Oda took eleven years to introduce any form at all – Boa Hancock’s love for Luffy. However this is considered to be a one-sided romance solely intended for humor as Luffy does not have those same feelings for Hancock, having turned down her marriage proposal several times in the past. Oda also mentioned in one of the SBS that One piece is manga targeted at young boys, therefore there will be no romance between the straw hat crew.
